The Valparaiso Alternative High School is partnering up with the Valparaiso Parks and Recreation Department to preserve natural wildlife. In October of 2006, stage one will begin with students removing Japanese Honeysuckle from woodlands in their area.

There are several motivations for students to complete this project. First, they will restore wildlife and vegetation to its natural state by removing the invasive honeysuckle. Second, the Valparaiso Alternative program requires service learning for graduation to instill the importance of giving back to the community. Lastly, Students accomplish many personal goals through volunteering. They not only earn credit, but they also learn responsibility, patience, cooperation, and pride in their work.
